Brief and overview

This year’s Grand Challenge within the School of Design, RCA will involve over 400 multidisciplinary masters’ students engaged again in investigating a major planet problem, this time involving the world’s oceans. The project titled NEMO (New Economic Model for the Oceans) seeks to work across different continents investigating a range of themes covering environmental impact, loss of marine habitat, plastics in our oceans, new ocean economies and environmental sustainability.
The 2022 RCA NEMO Grand Challenge seeks to identify opportunities for strategic and system level design innovation that can stimulate cultural change and transformation through people’s values, and attitudes towards the environment. NEMO will propose new inclusive behavioural design approaches which can operate in social and societal systems

Problem

How might we prevent the growing noise from maritime shippong. While protecting marine animals&mitigate underwater sound pollution?

Project results

Sketch

Sound pollution is an overlooked catastrophe, marine animals depend on their hearing to survive. But sound levels in the oceans are constantly rising due to human activities.

Decibel is inspired by the Maze-like landscaping that deflects sound, modular partitioning system, and living interlocking barrier. The solution is a modular hexagonal oyster pods structure on which kelp is grown acting as a natural sound barrier between shipping highways while creating a regenerative marine permaculture system paving way for a circular economy system where oysters, fish, and kelp can be harvested.

To make the invisible pollutant visible we created an immersive experience using VR for decision-makers, UN bodies to-comprehend the magnitude of sound pollution in the oceans and understand how decibel would mitigate sound pollution from ship propellers when implemented.
